THE METHOD
A Book Review of Matthew Quirk's Latest Thriller
Disclosure: I received an advance copy of this book from the author. While Matthew Quirk and I have occasionally DM’d on social media, I do not otherwise know him or consider him an acquaintance.
REVIEW
Matthew Quirk has perfected the chase sub-genre of thrillers and it shows with his upcoming novel, THE METHOD. His book THE NIGHT AGENT became a Netflix sensation for (at least) two seasons, and I could see THE METHOD making it to a streaming series someday too.
In addition to the chase sub-genre, we also have the amateur, or accidental sleuth sub-genre in THE METHOD. In this case, a journeyman actress, Anna, who we will learn had issues while growing, struggles to perfect her craft in New York. Mostly by doing action scenes that leave her physically, if not emotionally scarred. She finds comfort in hanging with a fellow actress and friend - Natalie, mostly watching old movies while drinking beers and eating popcorn.
When Natalie disappears on what looks to be a mysterious late-night, last-minute date, Anna is concerned and soon goes looking. While she doesn’t initially find Natalie, she does find some sketchy dudes, and then the FBI finds her. They want her to help. But not too much.
But…Anna helps too much, and finds herself in trouble. The FBI swoops to rescue her and they come up with a plan for Anna to essentially go undercover against a group we are not quite sure what to make of. Are they foreign, government, criminals, oligarchs, some or all of the above? I can help get you there, but you are going to have to go on this journey yourself.
Anna has no training on how to be an undercover FBI agent, but relies on her wits and acting skills. She’s quick to realize as she closes in, that final acts have no retakes. It’s one and done.
No spoilers here, but time compresses for Anna as she races (literally) to locate not just Natalie, but a piece of physical evidence the shadowy group might use to control a lot of important people. Maybe even the world. The stakes are high.
Lastly, there are several twists and turns I promise you won’t see coming.
All in all, another Five Star effort from Matthew Quirk. I highly recommend THE METHOD.
WHAT I’M WORKING ON:
It’s been a busy couple of months. For my new subscribers, the books I write about the FBI (The 3 CJ Hawk Series of books so far,) have to go back to the FBI for pre-publication review. That has taken as little as four, and as many as seven months to complete. The others, the Detective Kiki Diaz ‘Station’ series, and the Detective John ‘Black Jack’ Morrison novellas do not. So when I put out two books in two months like I have in September and November, that’s why; I’m tied to the pre-publication review process.
WASHINGTON FIELD, A CJ Hawk - FBI Thriller came out in September to great sales. McLEAN STATION, A Detective Kiki Diaz Thriller will publish on November 18. You can preorder now on Amazon. Don't forget that all of the profits from this book will go to a favorite charity of mine, the National Law Enforcement Officers Museum Fund and Museum.
While I have solid outlines for a forth book in each of these, I’m also working on several other project. Two of them are historical fiction, with one being a major international investigation I worked on for years you likely know a lot about. But you don’t know everything, including that it was likely solved long before we really knew it. I’m really excited about this book and will give you details as I am able to.
The other historical fiction (which will come out first,) goes back to Southeast Asia in the late 1960’s and I have some unique witnesses and documents I am working off to make it very authentic. More on that one sooner rather than later.
Lastly, I wrote a short story more than a year ago I expect to come out in an anthology with several other indie authors in February. I’m sworn to secrecy by the editor on that one. But…I liked the character so much I’m working on a novella with him as the hero. There’s a touch of true crime in this one too, and plenty of room for him to grow in other stories.
